SPOKANE Washington Senator Patty Murray was in Spokane Tuesday to tour Triumph Composite Systems Inc. and discuss filling jobs in the area.
A state report shows there are about 2,500 jobs available in the Spokane area, but not enough qualified candidates for them.
Senator Murray says businesses and the educators have to work together to fill those jobs.
Triumph employs around 550 people.
Officials say one challenge is getting enough people interested in careers related to aerospace, engineering, math and science.
Staff at the Community College of Spokane says most students just don't know what's out there.
Another concern is getting girls and young women excited for jobs in these sectors.
When asked whether Congress should have spent so much time on the debt crisis before taking on jobs, Sen. Murray said it was an important step to identify what programs need investments to create jobs.
