SEATTLE -- The UW Husky football team is using technology to gain the upper edge on their opponents, reports Geekwire.
UW coach Steve Sarkisian has picked sophmore Keith Price to kick off the home opener against Eastern Washington this Saturday. To understand Price's approach to the game, Sarkisian is using lightweight, helmet-mounted cameras from Seattle-based company Contour on Price's helmet.
Sarkisian explains to Sports Illustrated that the helmet-mounted video camera gives a unique look at the game.
Coaches haven't had this perspective before, says Sarkisian. This is a technology that we will be using in the future.
Brian Kelly at Notre Dame is also a believer in the helmet cameras. Each of his four quarterbacks take turns wearing the helmet cam.
The helmet-cams were created by Huskies Marc Barros and Jason Green, who originally used the cams on their helmets while snowboarding and mountain biking. Their proposal for the Contour camera won third place in the UW business plan competition in 2003.
The company now employs 60 people and has been named one of the top 10 fastest-growing privately help companies in the U.S. by Inc. Magazine.
