Deborah Squires and her team at Northwest Harvest look forward to the season of giving. But this year they've learned for some it's more about taking.

I'm angry, says Squires. I'm just frankly angry because people here are passionate about our mission and we take it personally.

What's got her so worked up? Some group is robo-calling people asking for donations for Northwest Harvest.

There's just one problem, We never do that. The need is real. The cause is good but Northwest Harvest would never use that method to solicit donations, Squires said.

Fake charity scams are common this time of year. And in this case, the bad guys are calling well outside the state looking for cash.

We have a special connection to this group. KING 5 partners with Northwest Harvest for Home Team Harvest. Together we raise enough food and cash to provide millions of meals. This year alone we reached 4 million.

Tis the season for scammers, so don't donate over the phone. Ask for the charity's information and check them out through websites like Guidestar or Charity Navigator.

Give from your heart, but please use your head first.
