The wrong post, tweet or picture could hurt your chances of landing a job.

But now some companies will demand passwords for social networking sites from potential and current employees under threat of termination.

A group of Washington state senators is sponsoring a bill that would prohibit companies from requiring employees to hand over these passwords.

Senate Bill 5211 prohibits employers, as a condition of employment or continued employment, from requiring an employee or prospective employee to submit or give access to social networking account information.

This means employers cannot demand access to accounts or profiles as a condition of employment.

If passed, employers could pay $500 and legal fees for violating the law.

Congress is considering a federal law and six other states have already passed similar bills.

Public posting and profiles would not be protected by the proposed legislation.
