Police say a married couple was killed in an apartment fire in Lakewood Wednesday morning after the husband ran back into the burning unit to try saving his wife.

It happened just before 1 a.m. at the Morningtree Park Apartments on 83rd Avenue SW.

Neighbors say the woman had been sick and was unable to move around. Lakewood police say the man came out at one point to yell for help, then went back inside trying to save his wife.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Hallie McCurdy says arriving firefighters quickly knocked down the flames and found the bodies of the 64-year-old man and 78-year-old woman inside a bedroom.

The victims identities were not immediately released.

McCurdy says the fire started in the apartment's living room but the exact cause hasn't been determined.
Three other apartment units sustained damage. The Red Cross is helping a half-dozen residents in other apartments that had smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but police say it does not appear suspicious.
