The Washington State Patrol says it s not seeing enough quality men and women trying out to be a trooper and recruitment goals likely will not be met.

Troopers are boosting local recruitment efforts in the effort to increase the number of applicants.

Statistically, less than 5 percent of those who test actually make it as trooper, said Trooper Keith Leary.

About 300 positions need to be filled statewide.

State troopers don't have an exact answer for the shortage in qualified recruits, but they partly blame competition for jobs and higher pay among police agencies. An entry level trooper makes around $3,800 per month.

WSP is holding Phase 1 of the four-part application process in the various state patrol districts to boost recruiting numbers. Before this year, all testing was done in Olympia.

Entry level testing is set for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Lynnwood High School.
