Controversy about one of the Navy SEALS killed in Libya last month has Mitt Romney changing his campaign speeches.

Our news partner 97.3 KIRO FM exposed flaws in a story Romney told about a Navy SEAL he once met. The Republican referenced Glen Doherty once in Ohio Wednesday until senior advisers told the media he would no longer do it out of respect for Doherty s mother. She was upset that her son s name was being used for political purposes. His friends were upset by Romney s inaccuracies.

He skied a lot, he skied in some of the places I had. We had a lot of things in common. You can imagine how I felt when I found out he was one of the two former Navy SEALS killed in Benghazi on September 11th. And it touched me, said Republican Mitt Romney.

In his speech, it appears Romney is moved by his relationship with Doherty.

It makes me sick, Glen would definitely not approve of it, said Elf Ellefsen, a close friend.

In an interview with The Ron and Don Show, Ellefsen claimed Romney had to be reminded of Doherty s name four times in a span of 20 minutes at a Christmas party they met at.

He (Doherty) said it was pathetic and comical. They had the same person come up to you within only a half hour, reintroduce himself to you having no idea whatsoever that he just did this, said Ellefsen.

The close friend finds it odd Romney is using Glen s story a month after his death.

He (Doherty) wouldn t like it, but he wouldn t want any spotlight either. He d just want Romney to conduct himself as a gentleman, said Ellefsen.

Doherty s mother Barbara is angry too.

(Romney) shouldn t make my son s death part of his political agenda. It s wrong, said Barbara.

Ellefsen is satisfied the Romney campaign will stop using Doherty s story.

Glen was a person who was larger than life, and it s proper to just leave him at peace - admirable and intelligent of the Romney campaign, said Ellefsen.

A friend of Doherty who lives in Bellevue didn t want to talk about the controversy, but said he s happy it s at least keeping the memory of his friend alive.
