Verizon wireless is moving ahead with a controversial new fee.

Starting next month, Verizon will charge its 70 million subscribers a $2 convenience fee when they pay their bill on the Verizon website or over the phone.

Verizon says customers can avoid the fee if they pay with an electronic check, sign-up for autopay or by paper check.

Verizon says it needs the fee to pay for the wireless and online payment programs. But for some reason it doesn't need to charge to process a paper check.

The new fee is scheduled to go into effect on January 15th.
