KIRKLAND, Wash. -- An Eastside little girl's selfless birthday wish gained new ground Friday after NBC Nightly News spread Rachel Beckwith's message to television viewers across the nation.

Rachel Beckwith died last weekend from a multiple-car crash. But her legacy lives.

Last month Rachel asked that instead of receiving a gift for her birthday she wanted to give one; clean water to thirsty kids in far away lands.

She raised $220 and decided to try to reach her goal next year.

After Rachel's tragic death in a multi-car collision on Interstate 90 in Bellevue last week, people from all over the world flooded the website CharityWater.org to donate to her cause.

NBC Nightly News first aired its story on the East Coast at 3:30 p.m. PDT Friday, and before the end of the night, Rachel's wish saw an increase of over $60,000. That has brought the total raised so far to more than $686,000.
