A pioneer in Seattle's African American community has died.

Thomas Vassar Jr. was one of the first African American students at Seattle's private Lakeside School in the 1960s. Then returned years later as a teacher and the leader of an influential diversity program.

He was also a member of the Seattle School Board in the 1980s.

Vassar died of pancreatic cancer Friday at the age of 62.
