Investigators in Skagit County are trying to figure out if a series of arsons is connected.

Someone has set at least four fires in a two-mile radius in Mount Vernon since early August. And they seem to be getting more dangerous.

When a fire broke out at the Trinity Lutheran Church on August 5, most of the fire damage was at the back of the building, where someone poured gasoline at the back door.

Pastor Kevin Schubkegel said it could cost a million dollars to rebuild.

I hope it wasn't intended for the people of this church and what they stand for, he said. It does hurt, it hurts everyone.

The church was one of four buildings in Mount Vernon someone set fire to using a flammable liquid. The school district headquarters on East Lawrence Street and a vacant home on East Section Street had minor damage.

But then an arsonist targeted a home on South 15th, where a couple had just fallen asleep. They woke up to their front door and family car in flames.

The house was really aggressive, said Mt. Vernon fire marshal Steve Riggs. When you put flammable liquids on someones front door, that's really aggressive. The other ones were unoccupied at the time of the event.

Riggs said there are no leads on suspects, except that it appears they arrive and leave the scene on foot. He's asking the community to watch out for each others property, and to keep an eye out for anything unusual.
