PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Investigators were at the scene of a shooting involving Kitsap County deputies.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 8400 block of Bethel Burley Road SE, at a home just outside Port Orchard.

The Kitsap County Sheriff s Office says a 44-year-old man was shot and taken to a hospital, but few other details were released. One neighbor, however, said he saw the whole incident happen.

It went off so fast, it sounded like automatic rifle fire. It was just bam bam bam bam bam. It was just super, super fast, said Robert Parker, neighbor.

Parker and his wife hit the deck, ducking for cover.

We dropped to the ground right here and waited for the gun fire to cease, he said.

From the second floor of their home, they watched as deputies walked up the drive way of the home just moments before the shooting.

It's hard to say who fired first, said Parker.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office says a 44-year--old man was shot. Deputies were at the home checking on the welfare of a woman after her sister called authorities.

Investigators say the family feared she might be with the 44-year-old man, who the woman had a restraining order against.

There was confrontation between four sheriff's deputies and the suspect, who was in company with the sister, said Scott Wilson, Kitsap county Sheriff s Office. What happened from then on remains to be seen during the course of the investigation.

The sheriff's office couldn't say for sure who shot the suspect. In fact, they wouldn't even confirm if he had a weapon. But from his decl. parker says he saw authorities searching for one.

We know he had a weapon on him because actually right afterwards, they were trying to find out where his weapon had went, said Parker.

The man was listed in serious condition Tuesday evening.

The sheriff s office says the Washington State Patrol will take control of the investigation.

As for the deputies involved, they were being questioned.
