PORTLAND A suspect lit himself on fire while trying to steal gas in Portland Sunday, police said.

Just after 11 a.m., 62-year-old Harry Frederick Suniville stole a partially-filled gas can from a truck and began pouring the gas into his vehicle while he smoked a cigarette near Southwest 11th Avenue and Southwest Columbia Street, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.

The gasoline then ignited, burning Suniville s socks and pants, and singeing his eyebrows and hair, Simpson said.

Firefighter s extinguished the fire and paramedics treated Suniville before he was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, reckless burning, and theft, Simpson said.

Suniville s vehicle was damaged and towed from the scene.
