The family of a Victoria B.C. teen who died in an accident during a cancer charity bicycle ride on Sunday say they are heartbroken by his death.

Xavier Pelletier's family expressed appreciation to first responders and others who helped the 16-year-old after he was hit by a car in Arlington.

Their immediate support and tireless efforts give us comfort in the knowledge that nothing more could have been done to save his young life, the family said in a statement.

Xavier was passing other bicyclists when the vehicle hit him. No other riders were hurt.

Investigators don't blame the driver. She was unable to stop, even though she had been going slower than the 35 mph speed limit.

Xavier and his mom were among 2,600 cyclists riding from Vancouver B.C. to Redmond.

Xavier had been riding in honor of his uncle, a cancer survivor.
