A 40-year-old man was killed when his apartment caught fire in Edmonds Wednesday, according to the Snohomish County Fire District.

His body was discovered by firefighters in his second-story apartment at the Edmonds Highlands, located on the 23300 block of Edmonds Way.

Investigators said the victim may have fallen asleep smoking, starting the fire.

He has not been identified.

As many as 35 other residents were displaced by the fire. The complex has 120 apartments.

Damage is estimated at more than $550,000.
