Eastbound Interstate 90 near Vantage has re-opened after poor visibility from wildfire ash and 40-mile per hour winds shut down the highway for a day.

Traffic had been detoured at exit 115 onto Old Vantage Highway, where drivers experienced traffic delays along the 15-mile detour.

Nine semi trucks and 16 vehicles were involved in a 25-vehicle pileup on Thursday on that stretch of the freeway. At least 11 people were treated for serious injuries.

A brush fire on July 15 resulted in several inches of loose ash, which created white-out like conditions when wind speeds picked up. WSDOT is working to control the debris by applying liquid deicer.

Westbound lanes were temporarily closed but reopened after a few hours; they were not impacted by the visibility issues.
