Expect big crowds, road closures around Space Needle

Planning to join in the New Year's celebration in person at the Space Needle? You won't be alone. Officials expect crowds of 15,000 or more around the Seattle Center for the fireworks show. And big crowds means big road closures.

Seattle transportation officials plan to close several streets from 11:30 p.m. until 45 minutes after the 7-minute fireworks show. 5th Avenue North between Mercer Street and Denny Way will close. So will Broad Street between 5th Ave North and Denny Way.

The last monorail leaves for Seattle Center at 11:15 p.m. King County Metro and Community Transit are operating under holiday schedules, so plan ahead. The bus you need to take may be re-routed.
