Often when people talk about getting healthy, they focus on eating right and exercise. However, Dr. Cooper of Seattle Performance Medicine said for many people, and especially our morning news team, getting enough sleep is a huge factor in overall health.

When people regularly get less than seven hours of sleep, they could develop a variety of health problems, including:

  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Energy loss
  • Memory loss
  • Brittle bones
  • Mood swings
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Metabolism becomes irregular
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Cardiovascular problems

Dr. Cooper recommends getting eight hours a night. Those hours asleep help the body:

  • Regenerate muscle tissue
  • Strengthen bones
  • Fight infection
  • Improve energy and concentration
  • Maintain healthy metabolism
  • Reduce risk of high blood pressure and heart disease
