More lane closures are happening on Interstate 5 in South Seattle this weekend to replace expansion joints.
The closure begins Friday at 8 p.m. on three northbound lanes between Albro Place and the West Seattle Bridge.
Bridge inspectors say steel plates that cover the joints could pop up and pose a traffic hazard if they aren t replaced.
These expansion joints are 50 years old. They've taken a beating from drivers daily and they are just worn out and they can't take it anymore, said Bart Treece, Washington State Department of Transportation spokesman.
Three of five lanes were also closed for the work last weekend. WSDOT saw increased travel times on both I-5 and I-405, but drivers avoided the alternate routes such as State Route 99 or SR 599. Traffic on I-5 backed up for four miles and delays lasted about 35 minutes.
Local traffic watching company INRIX said the busiest time on that stretch of I-5 last weekend was between noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and between 7 and 10 p.m. Sunday.
All lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
