Derek Carlile, the Marysville Police officer whose daughter was shot and killed by Carlile s son last year using the officer s gun, has been fired by the department.

A two sentence press release Monday said Carlile s employment with the city was terminated, effective immediately, after the findings of an internal affairs investigation. The release did not say if the firing was related to the shooting death of Carlile s daughter.

Carlile was charged with second-degree manslaughter for the March 10, 2012 shooting in Stanwood.

The Snohomish County Prosecutor s Office said Carlile was in a rush to get to a wedding when he and his family stopped at a shop. Carlile left a loaded .38-caliber revolver in a cup holder between the front seats of the family van.

His 3-year-old son grabbed the gun and shot 7-year-old Jenna Carlile in the stomach. She died at the hospital.

A mistrial was declared Nov. 13 after jurors were split. Two weeks later, prosecutors announced it would file a motion to dismiss the charge.

The charging documents indicated Carlile knew the 3-year-old had a fascination with guns. The charge also stated that the holster the gun was in had an ankle strap, which Carlile did not use. The van also had a locking compartment where the gun could have been placed.
