Through the kindness of strangers, the older sister of Seattle boxer Queen Underwood was on her way to London Friday to watch Queen fight for history.
London is the first Olympics to have women s boxing as a sanctioned event. A special boxing commission granted Queen an invitation to compete in late June.
The Seattle Timesreported July 20 about how Queen s sister, Hazzauna, couldn t afford to travel to London. Its readers responded and sent in money. Hazzauna, a mother of two, says she received about two dozen donations worth several thousand dollars.
Cappy s Boxing Gym in Seattle, where Queen trained, paid for the tickets. Another Seattle company paid for accommodations and upgraded Hazzauna s airfare.
I think it's truly a blessing that people found in their hearts to give assistance to someone they didn't even know, said Hazzauna.
She will be ringside Sunday when Queen faces Great Britain s Natasha Jonasat 6:30 a.m. Seattle time 2:30 p.m. in London.
