Waste Management and the union are headed back to the table to discuss a new contract.
Waste Management says they notified Teamsters Local 117 leadership that they will have until Sunday, June 17 to vote on the Last, Best and Final contract offer.
The company said they want to ensure the Union has ample time to communicate the full extent of their final offer. The offer includes wage and benefit increases that average over 4 percent per year, and provides a total compensation package exceeding $98,000 in the final year of the new six-year contract.
Recycling truck drivers had authorized a strike on a contract offer as they try to close a $10-an-hour wage gap between them and garbage truck drivers.
The company then made a last, best and final offer, with $2,000 ratification bonus instead of a first-year wage increase. The company asked the Teamsters to vote on the final offer this weekend. The union said no.
We were perplexed when union leadership announced that they would not hold a membership meeting this weekend to allow our employees to vote the Last, Best and Final offer, said Mary Evans, spokesperson for Waste Management. However, after fielding numerous questions from employees, it became clear that many did not fully understand our final offer. With our employees' economic livelihood at stake, we felt the only responsible thing to do was to provide the Union with more time.
