SEATTLE - The Seattle Storm's Sue Bird has been named the WNBA Western Conference player of the week.

The veteran guard averaged 19 points and nearly seven assists in two games last week -- a loss at Indiana and win at home over Los Angeles. For the season Bird is averaging nearly 16 points and 6 assists a game.

The Storm says Bird stepped up her scoring in the absence of the injured Lauren Jackson. This is the fourth time Bird has been named a Western Conference Player of the Week and three of those times have come when Jackson is out.

The Storm play the Washington Mystics Tuesday in Seattle.
