The office of Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced Thursday that the official job description and online application for the Seattle Police Chief position has been posted.

The posting calls for a transformative Chief with a proven history of instituting department cultural change and reform.

This comes amidst SPD reforms outlined in a Consent Decree between the City of Seattle and the Department of Justice.

The federal monitor overseeing the reforms recently issued a scathing report, saying the police department was slow to change, in part because of resistance in the top ranks.

The description states that the new Chief must be: ethical, confident approachable, and hard working. It goes on to add that the future SPD chief must inspire the department and treat all people with dignity, civility and respect.

The city has contracted Bob Murray & Associates to conduct the search. The job description was directly influenced by the Community Advisory Committee put together by Mayor Murray.

The Committee also released a report regarding the community outreach process that included a series of community workshops and an online town hall. The report will inform the search committee as it interviews candidates.

During these events, community members gave feedback on a draft description for the police chief position.

The consensus from the public was that the new Chief should listen and respond to the community, demonstrate cultural competency and build community relationships. Community members also agreed that this person should change the culture at SPD and uphold high standards for police behavior.
