After six years of waiting there is a sign of progress along the Bel-Red corridor.

Crews begin demolition work on the old Safeway distribution center this week.

Greg Johnson says his company, Wright Runstad, which owns the property, is ready to tear down and start anew.

Johnson says the long planned, 36-acre site will be a mix of condos and retail, and will be connected to the new sound transit east link.

Bellevue city leaders have called the project a catalyst for development, although economic factors have slowed its rebirth

Johnson said construction will begin on the first residential tower early next year and will potentially be ready by the end of 2015.

But the grand vision for the spring district may take 10 to 15 years to complete if economic trends continue to move forward.
