KENT -- While strikes are looming in other school districts, the Kent School District started on time Thursday before the Labor Day weekend.

Summer is over for the fourth-largest school district in Washington. It has 27,000 students in 41 schools.

I'm tired but excited to be back in school, said sophomore Jaida Allen. I get to see my friends. I m a cheerleader this year. I love Kent-Meridian High School. It's diverse.

Kent is offering healthier choices for students. Seven elementary schools are receiving major funding from the USDA so kids can eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Kent School District covers a large area. It includes Kent, a significant portion of unincorporated King County, all of Covington plus parts of Auburn, Black Diamond, Maple Valley, Renton and SeaTac. The district says it is proud of it's diversity as it represents many different communities.

School also began Thursday in the Steilacoom Historical and McCleary districts.
