With summer just 10 days away, more kids will be hitting the fields and courts to play sports. All of these workouts can increase the chance of injuries, many which can be prevented.

Dr. Terrence Cronin, a Swedish Medical Center pediatric sports medicine physician, discussed how parents can protect their kids from sports-related injuries this summer.

Among other tips, Dr. Cronin shared two important activities child athletes should do before and after workouts: warm up and cool down.Kids should warm up slowly with sports-specific stretches and movements related to the activities they plan to do, Dr. Cronin said. Post-workout, athletes should cool down with a light jog.

Safety is always the top priority, Dr. Cronin said. Kids should wear helmets for bicycling; wrist guards and elbow guards are recommended for children on scooters.
