Thirty years ago, Commander Dick Scobee, an Auburn native, was among the astronauts on the Space Shuttle Challenger when it exploded just after takeoff.
On Monday, his hometown paid tribute with an assembly at Dick Scobee Elementary.
The lesson for students wasn't just about the explosion; it was about inspiration and learning they can be a hero, too.
Dick's brother, Jim Scobee, attended to honor his brother's legacy.
It's the kids of today are going to find the results for us to move on, or correct it, Jim Scobee said. Or maybe even move to a different planet. Who knows?
Now, many kids want to be just like Dick Scobee. It's not everyday a trip to the gym could one day turn into a trip to space.
