BURIEN -- The Group Health clinic here serves a community where more than 100 languages are spoken and many people lack health insurance -- two facts that make it even tougher for public health officials to reach everyone who needs to be vaccinated for pertussis, AKA whooping cough.

Medical professionals are asking patients of all ages whether their immunizations are up to date as the state grapples with a large number of whooping cough.

I check to see if they have had their pertussis booster shots and I send them right to our injection room if they need one, said Dr. Emily Chao.

Ann Lavine brought her children to the clinic after pertussis cases were reported at their school.

Everybody knows somebody with whooping cough, Lavine said.

On Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m., Jean Enersen will host a Healthlink Special, Whooping Cough Epidemic: Protecting Our Families. The show will look into the outbreak and provide important information to help navigate this epidemic.
