Washington Department of Corrections says Josh Blake was a difficult case and was in and out of prison. At one point, he had threatened to kill a law enforcement officer.
He did threaten to kill a law enforcement officer, which is one reason we closely supervised Blake, said Department of Corrections spokesman Chad Lewis.
Blake, 28, was sentenced in January 2007 to two-and-a-half years for 4th degree assault, malicious mischief, drug possession and violation of a protection order. He was released in March of 2010.
He was considered a high risk to commit a violent crime, meaning he was given extra attention during his year of year and a half supervision, which ended in August of 2011.
Lewis said Blake had a history of being non-compliant. At one point during his prison sentence, he was held in the highest security unit at the state penitentiary in Walla Walla.
In May of 2011 he was sent to the Kitsap County Jail for 47 days after he failed to report to the Department of Corrections.
Sean Jeu, who said he is a long time friend of Blake's, said he had a history of drug abuse and always behaved erratically. He said Blake's recent turn of bad luck may have caused him to snap.
According to Jeu, Blake couldn't kick a long-running addiction to meth and often carried a handgun. Blake was on probabation for drug charges and recently fell on tough times after being laid off his construction job.
That's his lifeline. That is all he knew, said Jeu. I just think he was probably in a situation. He had had a couple of priors probably. He probably thought this was it and he had no other way out.
Authorities have not officially identified Josh Blake as the shooting suspect who killed Washington State Patrol Trooper Tony Radulescu early Thursday morning, but residents in the area where Blake was reportedly found said they recognize his truck. Jeu said he has been in touch with Blake's family and they are shocked at what has happened.
I know his actions are bad. He didn't have anybody, he didn't have a role model, said Jeu. I've always had talks with him over and over again, stay away from the trouble. You can only do so much.
