SEATTLE- Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide after an elderly couple was found dead in their West Seattle home Wednesday morning.

Police said the man called 911 around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday to report he had just shot his wife. Then he hung up.

Police responded and SWAT teams surounded the house, located in the 2600 block of 50th Avenue SW in West Seattle.

After three hours without hearing anything from the man, officers moved in and found an elderly man and a woman dead inside.

Was it murder suicide? It's certainly looking that way, yes, said Mark Jamieson, Seattle Police Department.

Neighbor Steve McClure lives across the street and identified them as Harvey and Helen. SWAT officers used McClure's home to position snipers during the barricade situation.

They asked me to move to the back of the house just in case there were stray bullets flying, said McClure. About every five minutes the police were saying, answer your phone. And then they started to use Harvey's name.

McClure said Harvey was a hunter who owned several guns. Over the past several months his wife became very sick and needed assistance.

She was confined to the house and has been for at least a few months...He had just remodeled his second floor to accommodate her needs, he said. Harvey was a great neighbor and sort of a one man block watch. I feel a lot less safe knowing he is gone.

Neighbors said the couple are in their late 70s and have two grown sons.

The names of the victims have not been officially released. The King County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy Thursday morning.
