SEATTLE -- It's not easy saving Mother Earth. Just ask the crew who decided to lug beer kegs from the Georgetown area of Seattle to the Latona Pub in North Seattle.

It's a lot heavy, said Laura Robinson from the Pike Brewing Company. She was among a half-dozen local brewery workers and volunteers who participated in the three-mile trek Sunday.

Nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon than to haul a keg up a cobblestone hill, said one of the panting volunteers as they carried 160 pound kegs up the hill outside Pike Place Market.

This is the second year the group has decided to make the journey for Earth Day. Organizer Elliot Ryan, the Manager of the Latona Pub, said he wanted to show others that you don't have to use delivery vans to get your product to the shelf

I worry that people don't think about that or what it takes to get ingredients to your kitchen or beer to your bar, said Ryan

The group did take beer breaks at local pubs along the route.

The best part is when you get the beer to the pub and half a pint, and it tastes the best, said Ryan.

Fortunately, Mother Nature smiled on the efforts and gave the group a sunny day.

The message is that the sweetest beer will come with a little work and no dinosaurs killed, said volunteer Liz Bogel, who saw the group and jumped into their parade.

The entire journey took about eight hours but was well worth the effort.

Proceeds from these kegs will benefit the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, the Washington Environmental Council and Feet First.
