BREWSTER, Wash. Flames from the Carlton Complex fire destroyed the main lodge at the Silver Spur Resort overnight into Friday morning.
The owner said the lodge was burned to the ground. He believes six of the 35 homes in resort were also destroyed by the fire. He said the Silver Spur Ranch was fully insured and already has plans to rebuild.
Early Friday, homeowners in Pateros and Brewster were allowed to come back into town to check on their belongings. The fire moved out of the immediate area; however, some road closures were still in place.
Sheriff Frank Rogers said the number of destroyed homes was likely to increase; no casualties were reported.
Firefighter Don Scahfer reported several community buildings were destroyed in the fire, including the local post office, school, a church, and a hardware store.
As of early Friday, fire officials estimated the fire to be about 202,000 acres in size. That is nearly nine times the size it was on Thursday night when the fire was reported to be just 18,000 acres in size. Crews also expect two wildfires in the area to eventually combine into one.
