Federal Way Police surrounded an apartment building when a robbery suspect holed up inside.

Police said the 29-year-old man, a convicted sex offender, was wanted for several recent smash and grab thefts at a nearby Safeway store. They said he often used pepper spray or a knife as a weapon.

Police said they chased the man, and witnesses said he jumped out of a van while it was still moving. The van rolled over and the suspect took off running into an apartment where a relative lives.

SWAT officers used a megaphone to communicate with the suspect, and then set off a loud flash bang in an attempt to get him to come out.

After about an hour, the suspect was taken into custody. He suffered a minor injury when he was bitten on the leg by a police K9.
