OREGON CITY, Ore. A suspect is dead after an Oregon City police officer was shot while responding to a house fire in Oregon City Sunday, deputies said.
Police and deputies swarmed to 841 Linn Avenue after reports the officer was hit by gunfire around 1 p.m., said Sgt. Robert Wurps with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
The officer was loaded into a Life Flight helicopter and flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. The officer's condition was not known.
The parents of one witnesses at the scene told KGW their son saw the suspect on the porch of the burning home. When he told the man his home was on fire, the suspect responded that he set the fire, according to Mark and Molly Hansen.
The suspect then reportedly shot the arriving officer in the middle of the street, and witnesses took off into their homes.
Dozens of police moved in on the home and the threat to the public ended after the suspect was killed before 3 p.m., Wurpes said.
Firefighters were originally called to the fire but were told there was a man with a gun and could not fight the fire, according to Brandon Paxton with the Clackamas Fire District.
