Crews worked through the weekend on the temporary span for Interstate 5 over the Skagit River and moved the steel framework for the first of two temporary bridge sections in place this morning.

Over the weekend, Washington State Department of Transportation crews poured new concrete bridge supports and on Monday, they pushed the first section into placed. The next step is to correctly position the span over the concrete supports.

Getting to this point hasn't been easy, said Jay Drye, WSDOT assistant regional administrator. Each step of removing and replacing the damaged bridge span has to be carefully choreographed to maximize efficiency, speed and safety.

WSDOT hopes to have workers on around-the-clock shifts as much as possible until the temporary bridge opens to traffic, which hopefully be sometime next week.
