The Secretary of State's office found almost 1,000 potentially invalid signatures on petitions to block gay marriage in Washington state.

The state's Elections Division set aside 48 disputed petitions from a paid signature gatherer working for Preserve Marriage and the National Organization for Marriage.

Gay marriage opponents submitted more than 247,000 signatures, twice what they needed to put referendum 74 on the ballot.
