TUMWATER, Wash. -- It s about to get a lot easier to buy booze in Tumwater, but the city council may take steps to limit the number of retailers.

Currently, hard alcohol drinkers only have one place to shop in Tumwater: the state owned liquor store.

But starting June 1, that number jumps to seven.

According to the city, liquor sales will also be allowed at the Albertson s, Costco, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

Under the voter-approved initiative, only stores larger than 10,000 square feet can sell hard alcohol.

However, if an area is considered underserved, smaller retailers can qualify to sell liquor.

Tuesday night, the Tumwater City Council will discuss prohibiting additional liquor retailers for at least six months.

We just want to make certain we re not having proliferation of these things before we can have our own regulations in place, said Tumwater Community Development Director Mike Matlock.

There is a public hearing on the liquor store proposal Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
