Imagine getting a text message from your boss saying Don t bother coming into work. You re fired.

That s basically what happened Tuesday to former Seattle Mariner Joey Cora, reports The Chicago Sun-Times.

The Chicago White Sox on Monday announced an immediate end to the managerial reign of Ozzie Guillen. Cora, who served as the White Sox bench coach, was reportedly told he would serve as interim manager for the final two games of the season.

But Cora reportedly received a text message Tuesday morning from White Sox General Manager Ken Williams, saying not to bother coming to the ballpark because pitching coach Don Cooper would be handling the manager duties.

Guillen is expected to be named manager of the Florida Marlins Wednesday and Cora is expected to join him.

Cora was a member of the 1995 Refuse to Lose Mariners team that made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. One of the best-known images of him was when he sat in the dugout, inconsolable after the Mariners lost the 1995 ALCS to the Cleveland Indians.
