Seattle's Mayor Mike McGinn has a similar view.

That's a potent mix, with the Stand Your Ground Laws, a permissive gun culture and racial profiling. We have a lot of work to do to change our culture to prevent tragedies like this.

Washington is one of 31 states with laws or legal precedents similar to Florida. Like Florida, in Washington, people have a rights to defend themselves with lethal force if they believe their lives are in danger.

Each state's laws differ.

Washington's version is based on a State Supreme Court ruling and not an act of the legislature.
