SEATTLE You can give your old Christmas tree new life as compost or wood chips by recycling it.

In King County, simply place your tree on the curb for collection with your regular yard waste. Be sure to remove all decorations and tinsel.

Visit the King County tree-cycling Web site to find specifics for your city.

You can also check the list of King County recycling and transfer stations and private yard waste facilities that accept holiday trees for recycling.

In some neighborhoods in the Puget Sound area, the Boy Scouts will be collecting trees for recycling. Operation Dry Needles has been operating for more than 20 years. Donations help provide for summer camp and other programs.

Check the Coverage Area Map to see if a troop in your area is collecting trees.

On the Sammamish Plateau last year, 200 Scouts participated in the program, and more than 3,500 Christmas trees are estimated to have been recycled. Plateau residents can get information here.
