PORTLAND -- The largest fundraising event for pets on the West Coast is trying to set a different record this year: Most costumed canines ever gathered in one place.

Oregon Humane Society's 27th Annual Doggie Dash takes place at Tom McCall Waterfront Park on May 10 and organizers hope to gather more than 1,326 dogs in costume at the event.

If just half of the dogs who come to the dash every year show up in costume, we ll easily beat the Guinness record and have a great time doing it, said OHS executive director Sharon Harmon. I can t wait to see well over 1,000 costumed dogs in one place and all for a great cause!

The current Guinness world record was set two years ago in St. Louis, Harmon said.

About 3,500 dogs showed up for the Doggie Dash last year. This year Harmon said organizers hope to raise a record $500,000. The theme for 2014 is Walk. Run. Be a Hero!
