OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The city of Olympia is the latest to ban plastic, grocery-style bags.

The Olympian

reported that the Olympia City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to ban the bags starting in July, joining similar actions taken by Tumwater and unincorporated Thurston County. Thin bags used for meat or produce and the thicker plastic bags used by department stores are exempt from the ban.

Shoppers will either have to bring their own reusable bags to stores or pay 5 cents for a paper bag.
