Powell boys' memorial dedicated on anniversary of mother's disappearance
PUYALLUP, Wash. -- About 100 people gathered at a cemetery in Puyallup to remember the lives of Charlie and Braden Powell Thursday night.
The brothers were brutally killed by their father, Josh Powell, who claimed his own life the same day. Now an Angel of Hope statue sits near the boys' gravesite. It was dedicated on the third anniversary of their mother, Susan Cox Powell's disappearance.
Susan Cox Powell was last seen inside her home in Utah. Investigators focused on her husband, Josh Powell. Now he is gone and the case remains unsolved.
We still miss our daughter. It is not over for us. We just keep going, said Susan's father Chuck Cox.
Susan's family decided to use community donations to build the Angel of Hope statue. It is not just in the memory of Charlie and Braden. The names of other children who have passed away will be etched into bricks as part of the memorial. Cox hopes it will be a healing tribute for the community.
We've had a lot of tragedies and it is just nice to know there's a place to come that gives them hope, said family friend Kelle Pollard.
Meanwhile the West Valley City police department said while Susan's disappearance is an ongoing investigation, they have scaled back on the number of full time investigators assigned to the case. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to Susan's whereabouts.
