From recipes to fashion ideas to inspiration for the home, millions of people are discovering the latest craze called Pinterest. Pinterest has become the fastest growing social network site, even faster than Facebook or Twitter.
It acts as digital inspiration board where users can pin things they love and share them with their followers. Pinterest allows you to organize images into boards for specific categories. When you pin something new, your followers will see it. They can like, comment or re-pin it to their boards.
Ashley Rodriguez, the Seattle mother behind a popular food blog called Not Without Salt, says it's become a bit of daily habit for her. As a visual person, she finds pictures and ideas that inspire her to create.
I think Pinterest is a way of organizing what I was already looking at and getting visually stimulated by, but now I can just pin it, said Rodriguez.
Her profile page is very food-heavy, with a majority of pins about recipes she wants to try and recipes she's created. But she also uses it for practical reasons.
I use it to help plan my kids' birthday parties, said Rodriguez. One of her sons wants a superhero birthday party, so she searched for superhero on Pinterest and she found dozens of ideas that she saved to her inspiration board.
When she was renovating her yard, Rodriguez was able to save landscape ideas to her Pinterest page and show them to her gardener, giving him a better of idea what she was envisioning.
Social media consultant Shauna Causey says over the past few months, Pinterest has exploded in popularity. Causey says there are about 20 million unique visitors a month and 80 percent of users are women.
I think what's unique about it is it's inspirational and aspirational and people are actually clicking through and buying products, said Causey.
Rodriguez says since she's joined Pinterest, she's seen increased traffic on her blog Not Without Salt and she attributes the growth to Pinterest.
KING 5 News has also joined the Pinterest craze. You can find food, photography, photos from viewers and news of the day at www.pinterest/king5seattle.
