ARLINGTON, Wash. -- The federal government and the state are teaming up to help victims of the Oso landslide get financial assistance as soon as possible.
Monday afternoon, three joint FEMA-state disaster recovery centers opened in Snohomish County - one in Arlington, one at the Oso fire station on the west side of the slide, and one in Darrington.
As of Monday, 229 people had registered online or by phone with FEMA for disaster relief assistance. With the opening of the disaster recovery centers, that number is expected to go up. It's going to be easier for people who need assistance to understand what financial help is available and how to get it.
At these FEMA-state disaster recovery centers, residents can apply for disaster relief for everything from a home that was destroyed to damaged personal property to funeral expenses. FEMA handles direct grants-money you don't have to pay back and the Small Business Administration offers low interest loans.
People can get their questions answered, sit down face to face as close as I am to you and get their questions answered by FEMA and the Small Business Administration, said Don Jacks with FEMA.
We're hoping everybody in the declared disaster counties comes in - all homeowners, renters and businesses are eligible for loans in the declared disaster counties, said Kevin Wynne with the Small Business Administration.
FEMA could not say Monday if anyone s actually gotten a payout yet. They say they re working on tracking down that information.
FEMA says the centers are located at Haller Park, 154 West Cox Avenue in Arlington, the Oso Fire Station located at 21824 SR 530 NE, and the Darrington Ranger District Office, 1405 Emens St. in Darrington.
The Disaster Recovery Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 11am to 8pm, Saturday from 11am to 4pm, and closed on Sunday. Residents should pre-register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or at www.disasterassistance.gov.
