As doctors use new technology to help their patients, the government says some of those smartphone or tablet apps may need a second look. Some mobile apps allow doctors to listen to a patient's heart beat, or calculate medicine dosages.

But the Food and Drug Administration says apps that aim to transform a phone or tablet into a medical device, or act as an accessory to an already approved device, will need approval from the agency. The FDA is worried about the consequences if some of those apps don't work properly.
