GRESHAM,Ore -- The Oregon Department of Justiceis still investigating a complaint that a Greshambakeryrefused to make a weddingcake for a same-sex marriage.
In the meantime, celebrity baker Duff Goldman has offered to make the couple a free cake.
The lesbian couple's story got national attention and the well-known Baltimore baker with the TV show, Ace of Cakes offered to make them a cake for free, then even ship it at no charge, according to a report in the Huffington Post Monday.
Goldman's bakery, Charm City Cakes, has made cakes for the Preakness Stakes, a Super Bowl, the fifth Harry Potter movie, and NASA.
The incident happened on Jan. 17 at Sweet Cakes by Melissa. In an appointment, owner Aaron Klein told a mother and daughter that he and his wife don't make cake for same-sex marriages.
ORS659A.403 is the law in question. In short, itprohibits discrimination in places of public accommodation. Klein and his wife have two weeks to respond to the Oregon Department of Justice's inquiry into what happened.
People who open up their store to the public have to follow the law because it applies legally to everybody, said Comm. Brad Avakian with the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries.
