BREWSTER, Wash. Flames from the Carlton Complex wildfire forced people to evacuate the town of Pateros , Washington on Thursday evening.

Emergency Management has ordered the evacuation of the town of Pateros which includes the Red Cross shelter at the Pateros Elementary School. Police said people were evacuating around 7:00 p.m. when flames reached Pateros city limits. People in nearby Brewster are on standby to evacuate.

Highway 97 near Brewster is closed according to fire information officers.

The flames are part of the 18,000 acre wildfire which has already destroyed two homes in the Methow Valley. There were likely other buildings damaged or destroyed. DNR workers were working to survey the damage as of Thursday morning. A portion of Highway 20 is also closed nearby.

Firefighters are primarily battling the flames from the air.

The fires began Wednesday in the area.
