SEATTLE -- Seattle homicide detectives are still trying to determine how a woman ended up dead on Seattle's Burke Gilman Trail Friday morning.

A passerby called Seattle police around 4:30 a.m. after finding the body in the 2400 Block of North Northlake Way in the Wallingford neighborhood near the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

The woman was in her 20s and had a gunshot wound. Police do not believe it was a random attack.

Terry Lad, who lives nearby, was walking his dog back to his boat around midnight when he heard a single gunshot.

As I was walking back I heard a gunshot and thought that s strange. That s not a firecracker, Lad said. It s a little disturbing that it happened, but not necessarily too surprising. I m kinda worried about walking my dog at midnight.

Several blocks of the popular trail have been blocked off as homicide detectives continue their investigation where the woman s body was discovered.

It s a great area, great ride boats, said cyclist Greg Jackson, who rides along the busy path. I m medium surprised. There are some people who park their cars along here because it s 24-hour/48-hour parking. So they park their van that they re living in. There are people down there.

Detectives plan to interview witnesses and collect evidence at the scene through much of Friday.
